At least eight people have been killed after a car exploded in New Delhi, say Indian police.

The blast happened at the gates of the Red Fort metro station and local media said at least 11 people had also been injured.

“We heard a big sound, our windows shook,” one resident, who did not give a name, told NDTV.

Sanjay Tyagi, a spokesman for Delhi police, said they were still investigating the cause and the fire service said at least six vehicles and three autorickshaws had caught fire.

The 17th-century Red Fort is a former Mughal palace and a major tourist attraction in the city.
