Police searching for the partner of a pregnant teacher found dead in Glasgow have discovered a body.

Officers were looking for David Yates after Marelle Sturrock, 35, was discovered dead at a property in the city’s Jura Street at around 8.40am on Tuesday.

Police said the body, found in Mugdock Reservoir on Thursday evening, is yet to be formally identified but it is believed to be Yates, 36.

Divers were earlier seen at the East Dumbartonshire park and officers taped off parts of the reservoir.

A murder investigation is now under way but nothing has been established so far to suggest anyone else was involved in Marelle’s death, Police Scotland said.

Yates was last seen on Sunday shortly after 8pm. His white Seat Ateca was discovered on Tuesday at Mugdock Country Park, nine miles away from where Ms Sturrock was found.

‘It’s tragic she will never get to be a mum’

Detective Superintendent Nicola Kilbane earlier declined to comment on the couple’s relationship – or if there had been any prior police involvement.

The teacher was 29 weeks pregnant and police have confirmed her unborn baby did not survive.

Ms Kilbane said: “Our thoughts are with Marelle’s family and friends, along with everyone affected by this tragedy.

“We are providing her family with specialist support at this incredibly difficult time.”

‘Lovely, kind, diligent and considerate’

Parents and carers of pupils at Sandwood Primary School, where Ms Sturrock worked, were told of her death in a letter on Wednesday.

Paying tribute later, headteacher Fiona Donnelly said: “She was a lovely, kind, diligent and considerate person who loved and made time for everyone.”

Ms Sturrock was from the Scottish Highlands but moved to Glasgow when she was 17 to pursue a career in the performing arts.

She later became a primary school teacher after completing her postgraduate diploma in education.

Ms Donnelly added: “We are a school community in mourning and are devastated by the tragic news of her death and pass on our deepest condolences to her family and friends as we all come to terms with our loss.”
