Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey has said Woody Harrelson could actually be his brother.

The revelation came as the Academy Award winner and author of Greenlights spoke on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, about his “bromance” with his True Detective co-star.

McConaughey revealed on the show how his mother possibly knew Harrelson’s father.

Referring to the bond he shares with Harrelson, the actor said: “You know, where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, has always been a murky line and that’s part of the bromance right?”

McConaughey said his friendship with Harrelson has also brought their families together.

“My kids call him uncle Woody, his kids call me uncle Matthew… and you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me and my family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him,” he said.

‘Woody, I knew your dad’

McConaughey said his mother dropped heavy hints regarding a genetic link to Harrelson on a trip to Greece some years ago.

He said: “We’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families. And my mum is there, and she says ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’

“Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew’. It was a loaded K-N-E-W,” he joked.

After his mother’s comment McConaughey said he began to do the “math”.

“We went on to unpack what this ‘knew’ meant, and did some math and found out that [Harrelson’s] dad was on furlough at the same time my mum and dad were in their second divorce,” he added.

The Oscar winner said there may also be possible receipts and places where there “might have been a gathering or a meeting or a ‘knew’ moment.”

The DNA test

When asked if the actor has taken a DNA test to check if Harrelson was really his half-brother, McConaughey responded: “It’s a little easier for Woods to say ‘Come on let’s do it!’ [DNA test] What’s the skin in it for him?

“It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take the chance to go ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?’ I got more skin in the game.”

The pair are set to star in a comedy series called Brother From Another Mother on Apple TV+.

The series is “based on truth,” McConaughey said and explores the bond between the two actors and their families.

The comedy created by Emmy Award winner David West Read is a “heartfelt odd couple love story” based around the “strange and beautiful bond” between McConaughey and Harrelson, the Apple TV+ press release said.

“Matthew and Woody’s friendship is tested when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew’s ranch in Texas,” it added.
