Some of Britain’s finest actors have earned nominations for the 80th Golden Globes, ahead of the ceremony’s return to television next year.

Dame Emma Thompson, Olivia Colman, Bill Nighy and Daniel Craig all received nods for top awards, with winners due to be revealed at a star-studded event in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles in January.

Normally one of the highest profile showbiz events of the calendar, last year’s Golden Globes ceremony was held in private following controversy over the diversity of the organising body’s membership and allegations that votes had been influenced by “freebies”.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has since been attempting to rebuild the awards’ reputation, and have added over 100 new voters to their voting body, which they say “is now 52% female, 51.5% racially and ethnically diverse”.

Sci-fi comedy Everything Everywhere All at Once has six nominations, while Hollywood period movie Babylon and Steven Spielberg’s life story The Fablemans both have five.

In the TV categories, mocumentary sitcom Abbott Elementary leads the field with five nods, royal Netflix drama The Crown has four as does Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Only Murders in the Building, Pam & Tommy and The White Lotus: Sicily.

She’s up against Cate Blanchett for Tar, Viola Davis for The Woman King, Ana de Armas for Blonde and Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans.

While the 2023 Golden Globes will be televised, the awards ceremony’s future is by no means guaranteed, with 2023 marking the end of the HFPA’s agreement with network NBC.

Following in the footsteps of the likes of Ricky Gervais, and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the awards.

The 2023 Golden Globes will be held on Tuesday 10 January and broadcast on NBC and streaming service Peacock.
